Dont's of Submitting Music

So you want to send us your music. Great! Being a radio station, we are reliant on music to fill the space between our programmers saying “um” and “ah”. But there are some things you should be aware of. It isn’t rocket science, but you would be surprised at how many discs we get that don’t adhere to the rules of common sense, or, for that matter, basic logic. The following is not meant to be harsh or exclusionary in the least; instead it is meant to make things clear and easy for you, get your music heard, maybe save you a bit of money, and above all, save my office from being overrun with crap.

The Don’t List

  1. Packaging

Your CD should come in packaging. This sounds obvious, but apparently it isn’t. Don’t send it loose in an envelope. Don’t send it and the artwork that would normally go in a jewel case loose in an envelope. And above all, don’t send it in a plain, unmarked white -paper sleeve. If you must, take a jewel case or slimline case of your own, remove the artwork and lay it on the desk in front of you. Imagine if you bought CDs like this. That would suck. Imagine if that disc you’re looking at came with absolutely nothing but a white paper envelope, with no information on it at all. That would suck even more. And, from experience, it does suck. A lot. Take that disassembled jewel case, put your disc in it and send it in.
  2. Burned CDs

We believe that the democratization of the manufacturing and recording process is a wonderful step forward for music. When you send us this revolutionary piece of media, and all we have to go on is some chicken scratch on the disc in sloppy marker, well, that’s a huge step back. You obviously have a computer if you burned a CD, so you must have a word processing program. For the love of all things tender and sweet, USE IT! Include a track listing (it might seem obvious, but…), and the band name and title of the record (even “Demo” will do).
  3. Bios, etc.

Anyone who tells you to send a 8”x10” glossy photo and a fancy brief cover with 10 pages of press clippings that date back three years and a three page bio is lying to you. It is a waste of your time, money and resources. Industry standard (for lack of a better term) is one sheet – a bio that includes contact information, a brief history of the band, selected quotations from press (if any) and a photo (if you want) all on one page. Anything above this is often ignored and discarded.
  4. Miscellaneous

One-song singles never get listened to or played. Sending a link to an MP3 in order for us to decide if we want the full disc will never get listened to – send the CD or don’t. And above all, listen to the station, even for 5 minutes, to make sure that your music fits our format. Wanna be the next commercial nu-metal sensation? How about the next diva? Don’t bother sending it to us. Just because the “new rock” or “Top 40” commercial station won’t play you because you’re independent doesn’t mean we will. And after all this, don’t email and ask permission to send your disc, or who to send it to. This information is all on this website.
