Noise says it well, but what is noise and what is music? One person's sugar is another person's salt or some such metaphor.

Improvisation, free jazz, contemporary composition, spoken word, mash-ups, plunderphonics, ambient, electronics, avant, post rock, extreme, outer limits are some descriptors. Fred Frith, Juana Molina, William Parker, Anthony Braxton, Morton Feldman, Jonas Hellborg, Buckethead, Iva Bittova, Otomo Yoshihide, Rene Lussier, Peggy Lee, Jesse Zubot are some frequent players. Axiom, Drip Audio, DIW, Tzadik, Innova, Ambiances Magnetiques, Thirsty Ear, and Cuneiform are some labels. Web sites like http://www.downtownmusicgallery.com/Main/index.htm, http://www.ubu.com/sound/index.html, and http://www.thewire.co.uk/ may help the inquirer navigate the sound quagmire. Contributions from a healthy local contortion of sound makers "live in the studio" including Chris Dadge, Jay Crocker, Dan Michel, Mark Dicey, Tokyo Sex Whale... Specials on diverse topics like surrealism and Elliot Carter (happy 100th Elliot) and interviews with big names, too big to mention here. Announcements of local music/noise happenings like at bug incision, dischord and new works calgary and land's end, jazz fest and folk fest, and any other fanciful live events.
